Do you know about ME?
|
 |
 |
Around 250,000 people in Britain
are affected by ME/CFS.
All types of people from all economic backgrounds and all age groups are impacted by the illness which is recognised as a disability.
The name game
Most charities, researchers and sufferers call the illness ME, which is the common name for Myalgic Encephalopathy, sometimes also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
In the UK the illness is controverially sometimes referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS.
Many sufferers object to the implication that they are merely ‘tired’, as the symptoms go beyond tiredness as you may know it.
Whatever the name, ME/CFS affects lives in an often devastating way. Many are left unable to work or study for long periods of time.
What are the symptoms?
Sufferers can endure symptoms including severe and debilitating fatigue, painful muscles and joints, disordered sleep, gastric disturbances, poor memory and concentration.
Friends, relatives and colleagues often do not understand why those disabled by ME may not be able to take part in events or socialise as they used to.
The problem is that ME is an invisible disability, with very physical impacts.
What causes ME/CFS?
We do not really know yet. In many cases, onset is linked to a viral infection but the triggers and speed of onset seems to vary. We need more research
