Convenors Report
The hillwalking section of Probus was founded by David Bisset the then President of the Club in July 1990,although at this time there was no regular programme of walks. In December 1991,Ian Pyper became Convenor and under his leadership the walking section now meets fortnightly throughout the year. Our Tuesday excursions have taken us over many right of way,to the top of Munros, over heather moorland, through remote glens and along coastal routes. These outings have been all the more interesting with expertise in the group covering bird life, flora, fauna and forestation.Transport to the various venues is provided by the members who make their cars available in turn as required. The distance of travel limits the area of walking available from Banchory,neverless,93 suitable walks have been identified within the area varying from 7 miles to 22 miles. Some 25 walks are completed in the year, which means repeating these walks on average every 3 years.Since 1992,the walking year has been highlighted by an excursion away from home, making use of hotels,B/B's and youth hostels. These outings include,The West Highland Way,the Speyside Way including the Tomintoul Spur,Loch Lee to Braemar via Jock's Road, the Monega Pass to Glenshee and Glen Eye,the Lairig Ghru,Glenshee to Linn of Dee via Glen Fearnach,Glenmore Lodge to Tomintoul and Cairngorm,Ben Macdui and Meall a'Bhuachaille Ridge. To date we have covered 2900 miles, climbed 12 munros,6 corbetts and many lesser hills. At present 14 members of Probus participate in the activities of the hillwalking group. The end of the year is celebrated by the Strollers and their wives, socialising over a meal in the local hotel. On tuesday the 29th.August the Section celebrated the achievement of walking a total of 3000 miles on a walk that included three Munros,Carn Aosda,Cairnwell and Carn Gheoidh.
