The Society in its current form has existed since 1980. It is for people who live in N.E. Scotland with an interest in Greece or Cyprus. Whether this interest is in Ancient, Byzantine or Modern Greece, in the literature, the life, or the people, the Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society exists to help develop this interest. It also helps Greeks, Cypriots and local residents to meet socially.
The Society has currently 100 members. Its annual programme runs from October, usually with a Greek Evening in the form of a party. After a show of short films on Greece, Greek food and drinks are provided for members and the evening concludes with Greek music and dance. Subsequent meetings, usually in Room 10 New King's, University of Aberdeen, take the form of illustrated lectures. They are held at approximately monthly intervals and are followed by refreshments. The December meeting is a film evening showing a Greek film with English subtitles. A Greek Easter party is organised, if the dates are suitable. If they are not, a barbecue party is organised usually in June. The lecture season ends in May with the AGM followed by a talk given by a guest speaker, and an informal party in the nearby chaplaincy centre. In June, an annual dinner is arranged at Christos Greek Taverna.
